Peter Kemble
Peter Kemble was a New England graphic designer and digital printmaker with a strong interest in architecture. He was born in New York City and grew up in Bedford, NY. He graduated from Trinity College and Harvard Graduate School of Design, and also attended Rhode Island School of Design and took workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He worked for architectural firms in Boston and Cambridge, taught at the Boston Architectural Center, and participated in juries of student work at RISD, SUNY Purchase, MIT, and the Massachusetts College of Art. He headed his Cambridge graphic design firm, Designs & Devices, from 1969 to 2005.
"During the later years of his career, Mr. Kemble focused his artistic talent on digital printmaking while indulging his verbal pyrotechnics in the titles he gave to each of his prints. His digital print work was recognized in single-person and juried shows at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., The Turtle Gallery in Deer Isle, Maine where he owned a summer home, and at the A3 Gallery in Amherst, Mass." - published obituary
Through his lifelong interest in art, architecture, and design he developed an insightful humor and unique graphic talent. He used color, form, transparency, and three-dimensionality in drawings and prints which play, surprise, and mystify.
Kemble died on June 15, 2019 in Greenfield, Mass. at age 80.
